Spring is the best time to wake up from our hibernation and let the sun shine into our mind and body. We feel like cleansing and detoxing, eating healthier and exercising more. The sun makes us do all kinds of wonderful things. Maybe that’s the reason why sunny cultures are so relaxed and happy people 🙂
I want to share with you the top six things I like to do to kickstart my health and let my body know that spring is at my doorstep, inviting me to enter a more vital lifestyle.
#1: Stay hydrated: Even though this advice has been around the health community for a very long time, it cannot be repeated enough. Our bodies consist of 60-80% water, which makes it imperative for us to stay hydrated in order to keep our system running. Water keeps us awake, healthy, focused and active, whereas a lack thereof can lead to dizziness, fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps and even constipation. Start your day with a big glass of water to get your metabolism going.
#2: Get outside and exercise! The days are getting longer, the air is feeling warmer and there is no more excuse to hide in your four walls. It’s time to get out and let the sun shine onto your skin and move in nature. Get your bike ready for the summer season, walk to work or meet up with friends outside and do things outdoors. I love spring and summer time because they allow us to exercise in nature and to be outdoors until late at night. Remind yourself that movement and fresh air are the driving forces for a good mood and a healthy body.
#3: Improve your food quality! I am writing this blog because I want to motivate and inspire you to embrace a healthy and whole food based diet. The idea revolves around good quality food and clean eating. Focus on incorporating more whole foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, ancient grains, omega 3 rich fat and good quality protein sources into your diet, while at the same time cutting out processed foods, sugar, and preservatives. Don’t give up if you don’t succeed right away, just try your best and take it one step at a time.
#4: You might have realized that I strongly believe in a good body and mind connection. A healthy body will only exist and hit longevity if the mind is equally balanced and healthy. I have read quite a lot about meditation and I try to meditate on a regular basis. It can definitely be a healing instrument, which I’ve experienced myself on multiple occasions. Try to find at least ten minutes in a calm, quiet place during your day, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. It is so simple, yet we often find excuses not to do it. I love meditation and I am sure that you will experience a vast difference and a positive change in your life once you start meditating on a regular basis.
#5: Socialize! The greenest foods and the healthiest smoothies won’t make you happy if there is nobody to share your joy, laughter and good times with! Having friends and family around is still one of the best mood enhancers! It has been scientifically proven that emotional and physical strings between humans are vitally important for our health. Another crucial non related factor for our happyness is laughter. It has a positive impact on our health, as it boosts our immune system, releases endorphins and prevents us from heart diseases. Call your friends and invite them to a healthy dinner party or a “delitritious” Sunday brunch.
#6: Sleep! Finally, after all the exercise, green juices, friends and family gatherings, and meditation, here comes the invitation to lie down and sleep. A good night of sleep is very important for your body to rejuvenate. During this time cells renew, heal and regenerate. Your immune system gets stronger and your body restore tissues, muscles and bones. It should therefore be in our own interest to improve sleep quality and get as much quality sleep as possible.
I hope that you feel inspired to include some of my tips into your life for kickstarting your health!
